WAKELIN & LINFIELD
EXHIBITION
"At the L.A.P.A.D.A. Fair in Berkley Square this coming September we shall
exhibit furniture and artefacts of the humble household and artisans
workplace, often termed vernacular, primitive or naïve. These are not
pejorative nor derogatory terms, but to those with the eye they simply
define one-off pieces that in some indefinable way are so personalized by
the creator’s vision as to transcend the purely commercial and functional
design to achieve an intrinsic quality that we call art.
The iconography in all mediums celebrates the lives, loves, achievements,
beliefs and politics of the working man and his family. It demonstrates
their profound love and respect for the animals, birds and fish that provide
their sustenance. ie: chickens ducks, cows and sheep. It further
demonstrates their pride in, and their care for the animals that work for
them ie: their dogs, horses and oxen. It decorates and lifts every day
humdrum utensils and furniture with painted, carved and inlaid detail in
praise of the humble vegetable, succulent fruits, the glory of flowers and
the sumptuous hamper of nature in general.
The appeal of these rare, sophisticated artefacts in today’s market is due
to their strong sense of line and design and the exceptional sculptural
nature of the furniture that makes such a sympathetic and complementary
statement in the modern interior, hence their enduring popularity."
