An outstanding and very rare 18th century harlequin tortoiseshell and ivory tea caddy. set upon an ivory plinth this extraordinary tea caddy is a tour de force of the box makers skill. the tortoiseshell has been moulded and cut to fit the corners of the caddy. silver escutcheon and bow handle. ivory lining between lid and base. inner tea lid treated in the same way with a silver handle for ease of removal. english. circa 1780.
5.5 inches high by 4 inches wide by 3.25 inches deep ( 13.5 cms by 9.5 cms by 8 cms).
