Fernand cormon (1845_1924) " the battle" oil on panel, fernand cormon studied under jean francois portaels (1818-95) in brussels, and then in the studios of alexandre cabanel and eugene fromentin in paris. he made his debut at the paris salon in 1870, and soon became known for his religious subjects based on the bible, as well as for his pictures depicting pre-historic subjects.
as well as being a regular at the cafe la rochefoucauld where he met edgar degas, cormon ran a studio of great repute which was frequented by toulouse-lautrec, van gogh, and others.
