An unusual garniture du cheminee consisting of a louis xvi white marble and original ormolu mantel clock with a matching pair of white marble and ormolu candelabra. the good ormolu is untouched and has not yet been cleaned. the quality of workmanship can be judged by the amount of chasing the graveur has lavished on the figures on the clock. on the detailed photo the extent of the graveurs hand finishing can be clearly seen in the texture lines on face, arms and shoulders of the figures. the subject of the clock is love's fickle nature as venus lifts the hem of her skirt as a cupid caresses her and another cupid peeps from behind the clock. applied ormolu mounts of trophies of love abound and an ormolu insert in bold relief shows cupids playing among clouds. the fine and unusual candelabra also in ormolu and white marble are of a fine design with standing dogs to each side and female masks. the three branch candelabra are removable so making this set even more versatile, allowing the garniture to be seen with low or high level sidepieces.
the clock has a convex white enamel dial protected by a glass bezel and fine cast gilt louis xvith hands. the 8 day movement with silk suspension and flat bottomed plates strikes the hours and halves on a bell. signed heron a paris for pierre-alexandre heron made master in 1788. baillie has him working at the palais royal, gallerie de valois in 1789 and says " sur une pendule en marbre " femme et amour" heron a paris". circa 1789. the clock is 14.5 inches high by 13.5 inches wide by 5 inches deep ( 36 cms by 34 cms by 12.5 cms) the candelabra are 20 inches high ( 49.5 cms). the ormolu is as yet uncleaned but cleaning is included in the price if required. the gilding is guaranteed to be perfect.
