Unusual french empire mantel clock signed bergmiller a paris in the form of the trophies of war. the rectangular ormolu base set on winged paw feet while the main body of the case tapers upwards. in the top spandrel corners are fine applied mounts of classical helmets of spartan or greek origin. below and to the side of the dial bezel are applied mounts of baiting swans among foilage. to the sides of the case are applied mounts of crossed swords beneath a shield and spear. to the top of the clock a cupid sits within a classical helmet with a sword beside him.
the convex white enamel dial is set within a fine ormolu bezel with palmette and greek key patterns, the dial has roman hour chapters and arabic minute numerals.
the movement is of 8 day duration, striking the hours and halves on a bell and regulated by a silk suspended pendulum.
the base has raised script, the lower phrase "n'a point vu de cruelles".
france circa 1810. 13.5 inches high by 9 inches wide by 5.5 inches deep ( 32.5 cms by 22.5 cms by 13.75 cms ).
