A rare and unusual 18th century glazed earthenware lidded vase. i bought this believing it to be a form of majolica or chinese as it has some form of chinese writing on the base, but i am having doubts afer having researched it. the vase is most unusual having strange figures of 1/ a seated man wearing an oriental hat and coat but with a beard which makes me think it's not chinese; 2/ an animal that appears to be a llama or could be a donkey; 3/ a man wearing what appears to be a robe, lying down. he too has an oriental face but with a beard and 4/ the lid has what appears to be a seal on top. the body of the vase has incised decoration. there are some small odd chips and the seal's head has been restuck.
i believe this to be late 18th century, circa 1780. it stands just under 12 inches high, 30 cms. i think it could be either tibetan or from south america but i am not sure, i only know that it is most unusual.
